"Fast Food Nation" is a harrowing book. Deeply engaging, but lays this all out.
Wall Street fintech-bros are determined to grind everything into nothing, after which they will have the gall to look surprised. But I can take some solace in that Marx was right, and capitalism is currently consuming itself. After having consumed everything else, of course.
I used to show students "Super-Size Me" and assign readings out of Fast Food Nation. It is out of date now. You should see how much WORSE it is than what Eric Schlosser lays out in that book. It's all easily accessible information. One thing I've noticed isn't just shrinking portions for the same price or higher, it's also the ingredients used. They are substituting lower quality ingredients in all types of things and cutting corners & breaking the law bc they know it won't be enforced.
I'll never forget his sentence: "There is s*** in the meat." My ex, a teacher, read part of the book to her students. They were all appalled, would never eat fast food again. Within three days they were all eating it.
I'm sure it's worse. Sand is a big ingredient for Taco Bell.

I agree Dex. I work harder every day to get decent food. That one chapter about the kids dying of e.coli - unforgettable. And it is so much worse now.
